San Luis Obispo is where the old California meets the new. SLO is a throwback to another time. People here are friendly and welcoming and so are the local customs. For instance, every Thursday night downtown is transformed into a farmer's market/entertainment extravaganza/ food festival where everyone is invited.

Nestled in the hills of the Santa Lucia Mountains about 15 miles inland from the Pacific Ocean lay this understated gem called San Luis Obispo. It is the ultimate break away from the big city. Population here is only about 43,000, but there is so much living to be done, it feels much bigger. Yet, there isn't the congestion of a major metropolis.
San Luis Obispo's history begins when the Spaniards settled here in the early 1770's. They opened a mission on what is now downtown. It is still standing today. The history of the town has been nicely preserved in some of the local museums, and in the fact that the Mission is still standing. The demands of modern society have not displaced this important piece of the town's heritage. This is a tribute to the values of local residents, and is refreshing.

The original attraction for the Spaniards' settling here still exists. The soil is rich and fertile; with water coming from the San Luis Creek There are a lot of vineyards producing some of the best wines California has to offer. Its Mediterranean climate is mild year round, and very productive for crop growing of all kinds. Wine grapes just happen to be the most prominent crop.
The mission still has a role to play in modern San Luis Obispo. It is a functioning church, and plays host to any number of celebrations and fairs over the course of the year.
Although SLO is not a huge metro it still offers plenty of cultural opportunities. There is music being played 7 nights a week. There are museums, art galleries, and San Luis Obispo Symphony which plays year round. In addition, there is a local performing arts center. Proudly, SLO offers a great nightlife for those who don't go to bed at 8:00 pm.
People here have taken a great deal of pride in their city. As such, you will find an excellent public school system. Test scores indicate that schools here are on par with some of the best statewide. SLO has remained an affordable city particularly by California standards. The median home value is $450,000.
San Luis Obispo is also home to California Polytechnic State University. This University has a national reputation for its engineering and architecture curriculums. It has a full-time enrollment of 18,000 students. It is also widely known for its practice of learn through experience approach. This approach has set them apart and has developed some of the most brilliant engineers the world over. Its facilities and resources are a major benefit to the area.
SLO is part of California's central coast. Although not well publicized, (shh don't tell anyone) some of the best living experience to be had in California is along this central coast. Within 15 miles, you've got beach access at Morro Bay, Pismo Beach, and Grover Beach. Forty miles to the north you can find Hearst Castle which is now a part of Hearst San Simeon National Monument. You will also find beautiful Lakes and State Parks throughout the area.
SLO is a wonderfully unique place to live. It is also a wonderful place to raise a family. Neighborhoods are safe and secure. The community is tight-knit and friendly. The free education here is terrific, and it is a natural eye-catching beauty.
